FACULTY & researchers

As of Fall semester 2011, the Earth System Science Program has over 65 declared student majors, many of which are focusing in the GIS & RS Track.  For more information about the various tracks in ESS, please see the program webpage.

Courses in the GIS and Remote Sensing track are taught by faculty and affiliate researchers at the NSSTC, offering a wide range of backgrounds and research experiences from which our students can learn.  Instructors for coursework in GIS & Remote Sensing include:

 
Sundar Christopher, who teaches ATS670, ATS770, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Atmospheric Science and an expert on advanced satellite remote sensing and pollution.

  Robert Griffin, who teaches ESS413, ESS414, ESS415, & ESS490, is an assistant professor at the Earth System Science Center with background in the social sciences, and interests in land cover change, and GIS and remote sensing applications for decision-making.

 
Cameron Handyside, who teaches ESS 411,  is a Research Engineer at the Earth System Science Center with a background in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, and Agriculture.
  Udaysankar Nair, who teaches ATS690, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science whose research group studies land, atmosphere and ecosystem processes with emphasis on the impact of land use change on atmospheric processes.

Tom Sever, who teaches ESS370, is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science with a distinguished career as NASA’s only archaeologist and a remote sensing expert having conducted research around the world.

The Earth Science Student Association, with volunteers from our graduate and undergraduate programs, offers support for students in GIS and Remote Sensing during the Spring and Fall semesters.  Our professors and graduate students also occasionally conduct short (free) seminars on assorted topics in GIS & RS, intended to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom or to introduce new methods, technologies, or datasets.
